Music Review: Bo Bice - See the Light

The Real Thing is the real equation apparent in this sophomore album released by Bo Bice following his time in the American Idol spotlight.

This is The Real Thing - in the world of Bice. He rolls and rocks and revels in the rock-a-billy stylings that this man is obviously most comfortable expressing himself within. This is The Real Thing when it comes to Bo Bice's heart, his soul. Turning on the album the listener is treated to a hearty mix of Southern soulful rock and roll with a twang of Country-at-heart thrown into the mix.

I find "Witness", the first track, striding out with a retro sound. It harkens back to a definite 1970's vibe. A little bit of MoTown creeps into the tone, and don't miss the "Frampton Comes Alive" voicebox sound. But hey, that fits in with the mix because what is rock-a-billy if not a conglomerate of new and old? I will say I'd rather hear The Biceman's vocals anyday over Peter Frampton's.

Second track on the album, "Take the Country Outta Me", is a strident twist into the roots this man derives his musical heart from - lyrics such as, "I grew up on Merle Haggard", he references ZZ Top, and includes of course, "Free Bird" (Lynyrd Skynyrd). Bice carries on to extol Marshall Tucker, Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson and Johnny Cash, Jimmy Rodgers, JJ Cale - basically a long shout out to paint the picture of what and where his heart comes from musically. This tune may come out as bar brawling, beer drinking music, but the man's paying dues to who fulfilled his mind and enlivened his musical soul.

"I'm Gone" is a tune with Bo giving his drawling best raw music-man vocals. The mixing put me in mind of his old SugarMoney sound. "Only Words", incorporates a glorious steel guitar introduction. I found this quite an introspective tune. As a side note, I love the background vocals, the gal has a kind of EmmyLou Harris sound - she compliments him very nicely. This track also includes an endearing blubbering saxophone which compliments the vibe. The next track, "Only Words" hits me as a fine tune, very bar band Southern Rock, smoky, summing it up in four words, "Pass the Jack Daniels".

"See the Light" has this whole, to use a semi-current Pop culture phraseology - "Brother Where Art Thou" vibe. Opens with a mellow mouthharp, rolling rhythm and blues groove, and a great flow. Religious overtones as Bo exhorts all to come on down pay their dues, recognize and repent. It's all about letting it 'shine'.

The next song is mine. "Sinner in a Sin". Bo gives it a more country twang than I've previously heard on other recordings and it fits the lyrics and the theme. Mellow harmonica flavors the song, the lyrics, "Loser that never wins, poet without a pen always been and doing it again" reverberates within my very soul. It's a song about lost love, about dreams not realized quite yet, regret about frivolous pursuits. The song also carries the theme running under the current of this entire piece of work: retribution, repentance, forgiveness. This song touches me in a personal way, emotionally, every time I have heard him sing it. I adore this treatment of it.

"This Train" is a cool rolling tune, more uptempo, yet still retaining the religious undertones. Bo Bice is singing his life and times as most artist will do; this tune relaying the carrying on he's done through bad and the good times. Bice has experienced life threatening situations with illnesses he's fought and this song feels like an anthem to keep on keeping on no matter what is happening.

The next track, "Ain't Gonna Die" finds Bo Bice all rock n roll righteous. He hits old school with a killer Molly Hatchet groove. "Whisky, Women and Time" is one of The Biceman's older tunes, very Allman Brothers sounding, you feel and hear that influence.

This album is Bo Bice coming out; showing everyone what is The Real Thing in his world. Should he have been able to do this album straight out of the Idol experience, perhaps he'd been giving Underwood more of a run on the charts. (As if that even matters.)

On a personal note to the artist: Bubba, you're no longer that poet without a pen. The Sun's shining down on you. Much Love and Much Success.

I love this interview with Bo Bice. He simply knows how to relate to folks, it comes easy to this man, but it's a skill he's learned and honed over time. In the interview on the Grateful Web, written by Elizabeth Bissette, Bo Bice talks about his path; past, present and future. I enjoyed this article not just because it incorporated Bo and all his Bice Philosophy, but too for her writing. Ms. Bissette has a smooth style, a lovely way of drawing the reader into the article.

When she introduces Bo Bice, she says, "While Mr. Bice is a brightly burning star right now, charismatic, witty, talented, he'll be the first to tell you stars fall and wit does not wisdom prove. But there's more to him than that. He does not take himself too seriously, but he takes music seriously. More than just a good singer and performer, he has been a songwriter for years and plays not only guitar but also a bevy of other instruments including saxophone, piano and harmonica. Additionally, when he talks about himself and the world, he is insightful, at times profound." (I love the way she wraps the words, such a good flow.)

"I'm not a reluctant celebrity, I'm not reluctant to live in this lifestyle, but I'm reluctant to use the word to define myself. I'm a musician. I've always loved music & everything about it. I've played for a long time and it's never seemed like work. It never does today.
"It can get hectic; sometimes I do three interviews a day, for example. I try to fit in a lot. I get tired but I never get tired of it because I love what I do so much. It's fun getting the chance to do this without feeling I've sold my proverbial Rock & Roll soul.
"Music, what I love, why I play it, is that it's about what life's about, being helpful to your surroundings, to your fellow man. That's what I want to bring everywhere. I'm not trying to change the world, but if you don't try to make a difference you're doing nothing and if you're doing nothing you're so far behind you don't even see yourself how miserable you are. So try to do something.

Bo Bice, "Freedom and Redemption"

According to the great Bo Bice blog team at Bonafide Bice, several great suggestions have poured out from one of their recent blog posts regarding naming the mystery CD due out on October 23rd the latest release date. The suggestion of "Kicking Up the Dust" is a catchy idea, and proven popular over there with the gals, but my take would be for Bo to provide an insight into what this particular CD might mean for him.

I like the name, "Freedom and Redemption". In numerous underlying themes in Bo's songs, the themes of freedom and redemption surface, so obviously they are important philosophies in Bo's life, to Bo's career. Random thoughts; he's free now 'to be Bo' something many fan forums have been rallying for since the post-Idol CD, largely seen as somewhat a shackle put upon The Biceman by that "evil" Clive Davis.

"Freedom" is one of the most important things we have in life and the one main love of our culture as Americans, our source of patriotic pride. I'd think too it a representation that Bo is setting forth his own man, not 'owned' any longer by the ties hindering and compromising his music from which he communicates his heart, his soul. This new CD is his declaration of freedom, a free new beginning.

For me, Freedom IS life.

Redemption another theme that circulates within many of Bo's tunes. It's a word providing that ability to reinvent yourself, to grow and be 'reborn'. Making changes for the better for those you love and for yourself, making good choices. Redemption from whatever source you may believe in is a gift whether from a belief in a Higher Power or from within your own heart. Redemption saves you, your soul, and those with whom you are involved. Like a wheel it's an all encompassing circle of paying it forward and paying it back, that well-worn karmic reference I like to refer to, live well and good things come back to you.

When I think of perhaps winning the lottery or dream of spending my time, full-time as a writer and artist, I don't review the financial implications or engulf my thoughts with the sole monetary aspects. I think of what really lies behind having a large windfall of cash or being able to devote your life to what you truly love in your heart and soul (rather than what's needed to feed your children and put them through college...); it's Freedom. The most important thing money can buy is not $2,000.00 designer purses, fancy cars or other materialist crap; if you're smart you realize what money can really bring; Freedom. Having the luxury to spend your life doing what is in your heart and soul the ultimate in freedom.

I hope for Bo Bice that this new CD provides everything that lies behind the beautiful meanings of those simple words.

I'm looking forward with positive anticipation to hear what Bo has in store for fans now that he's become somewhat free from the American Idol machine. I still listen to "The Real Thing" on a regular basis even though, some of the musical scores are treacly and detracting, but Bo's vocals compensate for the overproduction. I enjoy the man's voice.

Bo Bice sang at the Bluebird Cafe in Nashville, TN on Friday night. He appeared as the mysterious 'special guest', listed on the calendar. Bo Bice appeared with pals, Chris Tompkins, Gary Nichols, Jason Isbell. Undercover Bo must have decided to slip out sans Bo Peeps herd and try something different. This poster on the Taperssection Forum divulged the dirt in this posting:

"You Nashville folk missed one HELLUVA showcase last night. It was out of this world good. Jason Isbell, Gary Nichols, Bo Bice, and Chris Tompkins at the Bluebird Cafe. Some of the best shit I have EVER seen in Nashville. Not to mention it was FREE! Singer/Songwriter Craig Wiseman even played a few. That guys apparently has written over 30 #1 hits. Incredible guy as well. Wilker, Tom, and I all represented. I ran from the board and captured one of the best boards for me to date. Good times for sure. Wish I could share it, but looks like it will have to collect some dust until Isbell releases his solo album this Spring. " posted by 'm.'

Chris Tompkins is the guy who penned Carrie Underwood's hit tune, "Before He Cheats". Seems like these musicians are working on a new album according to the forum discussion. Wonder if Bo is to be part of this or was he just hanging out with the boys? Gary Nichols is listed with Mercury Records, Chris Tompkins", listed as Indie, and Jason Isbell of the "Drive-By Truckers". Exciting match up and I imagine our man, Bo, sounded great with them.

Confirmation that Bo Bice's is returning to his roots? After all this Alabama boy has been obviously greatly influenced by country music. Southern Rock is just a half-step from today's country, and this influence is reflected in Bo Bice's song writing and his history. I'm excited to see and hear that Bo is out and about, albeit "undercover" playing with guys like Gary, Jason, Chris. Stepping away from that ~~cumbersome~~ American Idol mantle and walking and talking among a form of music real and true to his heart. We know "Bubba" can rock out, but country music is another love of his, and his sound works well within the format.

American Idol Season 6: No Bo Bice in Sight...yet

I've been watching the auditions for AI 6 and I've been listening to these intial auditions, thinking as I review the guys I have seen so far - where is the new Bo Bice? Not that they can replace my "Bubba", I love this man, his heart, soul and brilliant voice. I loved last season's Taylor Hicks for his very 'ballsiness' (my word) but he can't hold a candle to this:

There is Sean Michel whom I like for his very difference. Bonus his "hippy" background resonates with me. Yeah, I admit to a squandered youth - art schools, writing classes, backpack trips through Europe, England, Mexico, Bahamas, Hawaii, where else have I been...??? oh yeah, Caymans, and most of America. (loads of Goodness I reaped from that education and those experiences *dripping sarcasm*) Like the guy named Sundance, but still I ask where is Teh Bo?

Last year American Idol hung their hat on Daughtry to bring TEH Bo Back - granted The Daughtry (no he doesn't get the 'TEH' misspelling, that is special...) was voted off a bit early, but he was no Bo Bice. Certainly obvious to me, he wasn't going to win Idol. Why you might ask? Let me inform with world weary Sunny snark insight - Daughtry had NO personality. ZIPppp ... NONE. The man had not one teeny tiny bit of funny bone in his entire body. Give me a man who is HAWT and Sassy with a decent pair of pipes and a sense of humor and I am IN LOVE. That is what drove fans to love Bo on AI-4; he was all that and the cliche' - bag o' chips.

I watch and I seek - and really what I hope is that my dear sweet "Bubba" will exemplify on his next CD what he is all is about, and be proud.

Bo Bice goes on-line and does an acoustic "Papion" from his homebase. "Papion" one of my favorites. Damn good song.

Bubba, my dear man, the sound could be better, get in the house 'studio' or perhaps a better mic. Seriously too, lighting needs work - too dark, can't hardly see you. One thing, man, keep Aiden in the background. Sweet.

Keep it coming darlin' you are on the right track.

The guitar in this part sounds good. Bo does some Skynyrd. "Tuesday's Gone". (again sweet man, adjust that mic...ouch.)

Bo Bice, "Sinner in a Sin"

"Sinner in a Sin", one of my favorite Bo Bice songs, and one of the favorite songs Bo Bice and the boys performed this year during the State Fair of Texas. By some strange karmic happenstance this video popped up on the google alerts today! I had roved on-line yesterday, searching for a video of "Sinner in a Sin", but had no luck. I will pass it along, and save it to my Bo Bice blog. I've been going through a rough time with lupus for a while, and yesterday had some serious pain; I felt a need to see and hear Bo Bice and "Sinner in a Sin"; it was just what the Doctor ordered.

As have many of his fans, I've missed hearing the concert news and reviews. I've been very concerned for Bo Bice, although he surely put on his brave face during the hospital/Halloween interview on bobice.com. There's a 'scary story' to listen to and get a laugh. I certainly hope that Bo Bice is truly doing better, getting in some valuable family time, maybe taking little Aiden out for some trick or treating.

The Texas State Fair welcomed American Idol 2004 runner-up Bo Bice and his band, Sunday October 1st. In typical Texas style, the sun tried to melt the fans the band and the very asphalt we were standing on in the 90 plus, degree heat. About 700 Bo Bice fans stood in the sweltering full sun beating down on us. A scorching hot sunny afternoon,but, for many fans, including myself, it was a rare opportunity for us to enjoy Bo Bice and SugarMoney live and in person. As many things in life, some things must be endured, so for a little while, we ignored the Texas heat; Bo Bice and the boys made it completely worthwhile.

I had an amazing vantage point and made appropriate use of my opportunity to get close-up live pictures of Bo and the band. I was in front to the side of the stage, and while several folks around me were encouraged to take their camera/video recorders down, no one addressed me, so I carried on. The crowd that swelled my immediate area were from Oklahoma, Arkansas and of course Texas, with a few in the crowd from Alabama. Diehard fans that follow Bo Bice and SugarMoney where ever they perform. I did not see one BoPeep t-shirt in the crowd, nor any BiceSquad memorabilia, but I imagine some were there in the mix.

Bo Bice and SugarMoney rock out with a cohesiveness that is generated by much time spent hanging out and playing together, along with an obvious sharing of much love for music. Bo Bice has assembled one hell of a band, adding to the original group consisting of John Cooper and Shane Sexton, a handsome, Texan, guitarist, Heath Clark, talented Thomas Lee on keyboards and the none too shabby axe-man, Chris Bell. Mr. Bell was completely impressive on guitar, man, he'd step forward and just rampantly present electric fire, rocking on whatever guitar he decided to handle, whether the denim blue one he blazed with or the wood tone he seemed to favor for the more controlled songs. I found Chris dramatic, mesmerizing, commanding, forceful and slash-accurate.

They played their usual songs they've been performing on the current fair circuit, but I was really encouraged to hear their take on "U Make Me Better", one of Bice's more recent releases from the CD, "The Real Thing". He rocks it with a harder edge which the song needed, and eliminates some of the pop vibe. I liked this treatment much better than the CD version. My favorite of the set, "Sinner In A Sin". The guys rocked out "Whiskey, Women & Time" and "Cinnamon & Novocaine", original tunes the mass public could listen to if they have purchased any previous SugarMoney music or the dual disk of "The Real Thing" CD. Easily the best tunes offerred from the entire disk set.

Bo Bice has gotten his taste of Texas heat the past few days, appearing in Wichita Falls, the first part of this weekend, culminating with and then yesterday, Big D. I missed the corny dog devouring contest, but it seems Bo put in an appearance, but only downed one dog; being there mainly for comedic moral support. One other reason he was able to take on one dog; he's been experiencing continued recurring issues related to the intestinal surgery he underwent over a year ago. According to his website, bobice.com he had an issue that required medical attention September 27th, yet there he was rocking for the fans in Wichita Falls and Dallas, Texas like nothing had occurred. Amazing.

I admire that kind of perserverance. I battle lupus and the past half year it has tried to work its evil within my life. Man, as Bo Bice demonstrates, you've got to keep on trucking or what ever is trying to get you down will.

October 1st Bo Bice comes to town to play for the Dallas State Fair of Texas beneath the shadow of Big Tex our giant robotic cowboy who's booming voice has welcomed (and frightened young children) for more years than you can shake a Fletcher's corndog at.

(Eat your heart out ThreeDimen!!!) Wonder if Bice will make any of the ol' Dallas haunts? I'll be out and about and will have a report following the event and cannot wait until October. How I love the Fall (it may drop below 100 degrees outside by then) and the Fair.

WooooHoooo! A great month to be had by one and all and to top it off, for my birthday I'll be seeing my 'old friend' Frank Marino with Mahogany Rush at the fabled Granada theatre. He's in town October 26th. I'm thrilled he's venturing out of Canada to do his tour, and of course to return to Dallas.

Before I go to wishing September would fastforward, the American Idol Pop-Tart Tour hits town next week. Go Soul Patrol!

bobice.com Interacts with Fans

I thought it a first when Tom Johnson entered his article into blogcritics.org about Taylor Hicks and the Ford commercial. I have decided to take it another notch further. I am reviewing a website. bobice.com has opened a new format that should work to drive more Bice fans to the site. Previously this website which charges a fee of $25.00 per year had a limited number of perks to draw folks to frequent. I just get bored with postings about how sweet Bo Bice is, how hawt he is, etc... along those lines.

Bonafide Bice has worked into The Accurate News Source regarding Bice and the folks running that site are dedicated and quite good at what they do for The Biceman. I am a member of bobice.com, became a BoPeep a long while back, and I occasionally stop by to see what's happening, but normally am not there longer than 15 minutes. I am not one to fill my days reading repetitive posts that don't really say anything. Forums sort of turn me off by the nature of the beast they are - which is why I prefer Bobafide Bice's main page which is filled with actual current news about Bo content.

Following Taylor Hicks this season on American Idol, I was one of the fans of the Great Gray Charles and his site graycharles.com. He and I were the first to blog about Taylor Hicks, and through that found mj's bigblog; MJ has covered American Idol and other entertainment shows for quite a while and runs a great site. It operates like graycharles.com and Bonafide Bice with articles, then a huge space for comments.

I digress, one of the reasons I don't like forums is the nature of the beast when it comes to commmenting and replies. Some forums can get very cliqueish in where, if you are not glued to the boards daily for hours, when you do post or comment you are largely ignored. I've had experiences too where I came under personal attack *cough* The Official Soul Patrol *cough* because of the picture of me I used as an icon for a while. One of the mods literally took a dislike to my face, kept at me about how it wasn't me, blahblahblah. It's not like I look like Demi Moore for friggin' sake; I'm not even wearing make-up in the stupid pic and I'm grinning like a fool. I like the pic, which I took myself, the day I came home from the hospital following the birth of Daphne. It was also a few days before the docs confirmed I had lupus. It was a good day.

My main point in this rambling blog is that it is a good thing that bobice.com is using the forum for something good; subject and fan interaction. They (the folks running the site) are also incorporating concert footage (soon) of the guys on tour. Seems to me I ranted about this very thing not long ago...used Frank Marino and Mahogany Rush as an example... You see, I met Frank in Dallas Once Upon a Time Ago, you can read my adventure here. I am a member of his free site originated by Wild Willie Parsons, a big fan of Frank's. Frank eventually found out about the site and contacted Wee Willie and became an active participant in the site. That's just the kind of guy Frank Marino is - he truly has such a great heart, it keeps in pace with his amazing talents. I received an e.mail from Frank recently requesting votes for Parsons who has been competing on "Last Comic Standing". Wee Willie promoted Frank for years, and now Frank is trying to help his friend. Quid Pro Quo. You don't find many celebrities or rock stars in the world who will step forward and tell fans personally - "hey thanks for what you've done for me". Normally stars will give the usual Kudos to "All my fans" etc... Frank contacts and thanks folks personally because he appreciates the fact they have and are using Their time to promote him - freely. You don't get much in life for free in this world, and it is rare anyone helps or does for others for absolutely free.

I think having the feature of Bo Bice coming into forums like Frank does on his boards will boost the morale of the fans, help grow the site and resurrect a lagging interest in following Bice's real life adventures in the world of music. I know there are about 25 hard-core posters that still sit on the boards daily out there; but overall the mass majority do start getting their attentions distracted - there's a big ol world out there. One thing besides the videos that would help bobice.com, is a music box/jukebox like on Frank's site and what Gray-Haired Dude (Taylor Hicks board that is now defunct) had on his site. I loved GHD's site and would tune in to it and let the music play while I worked. Since he dropped his site, the jukebox transferred (apparently there was some sort of buy out) to Taylor Hicks Fansite.

Bo Bice would benefit greatly from these features. Read also that new t-shirt designs are coming in as well as more and new journal updates. I know how time consuming it must be to put all this together, which is why I think Bo would benefit to have a copywriter who can put notes the band puts together onto the webpage in an interesting manner, and to have a designated person responsible for the video footage, not just the guys trying to do it all themselves. Maybe they have a vid handler, what do I know? What I do realize is novelty drives a site and creates interest in the fans. Bo coming into forums last night was a very good thing for him and made his fans very happy. I did not catch news of it until I got home from work; the e.mail from bobice.com hit my in box at 5:00 p.m. and I was out on a job site. I tuned it as it was over, but read the posts. He had a huge response. Better luck next time I guess; I did marvel at the lateness of the notification for such an event. If the site had word out even a day before, hit load could have more than doubled, possibly shaking the rafters of the site's capacity, but that would mean even more folks Today Talking about Bo. That's what its about afterall.

In closing, I'm pleased to hear of these changes in the Bo Bice website world, it is a move in a positive direction. Lest you say - what do you know about website promotions??? I just know what folks want to see and hear. My site stays like it is out of choice, not lack of my pushing it. This is mine and I love my Bo Bice Tribute just the way it is - but if I were Bo Bice I'd want more than what he's had -afterall, it's his life.

Idolling at the Crossroads

Bo Bice didn't recieve any real favors from Rick Massimo, billed as the Jouranl Pop Music writer with the on-line publication, Rhode Island News. Every sentence of praise was met with one of derision, as his article see-saws regarding Bice's appearance July 3rd at the Snapple Sunset Music Festival . (I've never cared for Snapple myself...)

Mr. Massimo apparently really hates Bice's American Idol CD, and every song it in save "Valley of Angels". He does have the ability to appreciate Bo and band's positive attributes, and enjoys Bice's songs like, "Cinnamon and Novocaine". Describing "The Real Thing" as a "yarling power ballad, with a heart of marshmallow Fluff" did make me smile as it is really a great piece of snark. I think probably what Bo and band - which by the way whatever happened to them being referred to as SugarMoney - should rearrange their sets. Putting a great rocker song followed by pop balled, then rocker song really makes for a bumpy set, eliminating a smooth groove. Maybe what the band should work, is start with the required pop, then carry into the real rock sound they so love, that way by the end of the show, all the pop 'yarl' is forgotten. I did take umbrage with the phraseology utilized to describe UMMB, as "fist-held-aloft knucklehead ballad". I happen to like this poppy-rock cut from the CD. (Of course I did not see how it was performed, nor how they sound in concert.) I also liked, for a short while, "You're Everything", but I got over that one. It started to leave a bad taste in my mouth like when you drink tea that's saccharine sweetened.

Mr. Massimo had a good point, in that while "Vehicle" was such a strong number during Idol 4 , and was released as side "B" on his single released after the contest was completed, why doesn't Bo and the band include it in their sets?

The world may never know the underpinnings associated with the real world of The Biceman. Carry on Bo and the band.

Bo Bice to Honor New York on Fourth

Bo Bice has been selected to sing at the Macy's Fourth of July Spectacular. He is to perform "The Star Spangled Banner" a cappella. Reporters of this event have stated it will be either spectacular or a disaster, as the song seems to carry no middle ground when it comes to being performed. I know Bo will deliver spectacular. He has the pipes to carry this one off. The event is to be televised on NBC. LIza Minelli, Lionel Richie, Nick Lachey are also billed to perform. Seems almost everywhere Bo goes there's Nick.

Bo needs all the assistance he can get as his numbers are in the downswing somewhat and reviews mixed on his appearances. Bice's last gig was at Steamboat Days. In this article in The Hawk Newspaper

The first omen was the nearly empty motorcycle parking area outside the Steamboat Days waterfront.
The next was the half–full general admission seating.
And the VIP section looked like the bird flu had hit it hard.
The huge crowd anticipated for Bo Bice never showed up.

In this article by Mr. Saar, he says that Bice is no Gregg Allman, and "Whipping Post," Bice's breakthrough cover on "American Idol," (sadly) did not stir the meager crowd. Mr. Saar writes what I had written about before on Bo,

One unfortunate facet of the fleeting fame that television has granted Bice is that he has no recognizable material of his own, and his set was filled with cover songs.
If you want to stay on top in rock, you have to have your own signature songs. Bice has none. It takes radio exposure, not television, to build up that kind of identity.

Now Bo does have some of his own songs, but for some reason just doesn't highlight them in his act. I would think too, that perhaps he and the guys in S$ would have been working on some new material since the Idol days. Well I know too well how a busy life can interrupt creative endeavors. I deal with that everyday. The guys are certainly busy with playing gigs almost back to back. Bo has a gruelling schedule. I have to hand it to his wife, Caroline for hanging in there, baby Aiden in tow, rolling from town to town in that tour bus. Check out the calendar posted in BonaFide Bice.

Bonafide Bice's coverage angled the low turn out to the fact that maybe the crowd were expecting country acts, but with the inclusion of STYX and POISON, I don't think low turn out for Bice can be attributed to that supposition.

Of course, you can't win them all...Mr. Saar does add that he thought it unfortunate Bice's turnout was so low, and expresses himself in a way that identify him as a fan. Apparently the low turn out did not affect Bice's delivering a strong performance, the show went on.

West Coast Reviews; Bice Draws 1,500 to 5,000?

Bo Bice's appearance in San Joaquin Valley Fair drew in crowds in the neighborhood of 5,000, according to the title link; but importantly he also made one little girl's 8th birthday one she won't forget. In this piece by Michael Sudhalter, with RecordNet.com, crowd was more like 1,500. Was it determinate on the angle one sat at to view the crowd? Beer? Both?

Anyway both reviewers give Bice kudos, with Mr. Sudhalter saying,
"While he's still developing as an artist with regards to new material, few performers in their 30s can deliver the essence of Southern rock as well as Bice.

That was especially evident when he tackled a pair of Lynyrd Skynyrd classics to close the show. Bice sang "Sweet Home Alabama" and offered an extended, guitar-solo version of "Free Bird" as the audience sang, clapped and danced along."

Mr. Sudhalter also mentioned the new single Bo (I picked this one out loooong ago) is releasing although he misspelled it. It's "U Make Me Better", although I too would have preferred "You Make Me Better". More real less kitshce. Wasn't Bo's choice though, no - Mr.Clive trying to hip jive. (U crazy ol' music promoting wundermeister.)

Bice gave a tip to his blushing bride Caroline when introducing this song. It was their first year anniversary recently. Bo, ever the romantic.

Bo Bice going Coastal

From Syracuse, New York, to Stockton, CA, Bo Bice shows 'have guitar, will travel'.

The Biceman is garnering praise and faves from the attendees of his recent concerts and is proving once and for all he is the real deal when it comes to that great ol' Southern rock sound.

One of his next and most well-known venues to perform at, the Trump Towers' Taj Mahal. Mr. Trump saw to it that Bice was booked for this show right after season 4's American Idol, and now, at last, what originally seemed so far in the future, will come to fruition. Bice's Southern Rock Idols, Lynyrd Skynyrd will be with him, so should make for a night to remember for Bo as well as the fortunate attendees of this show.

Bo Bice has come a long way over the past year, overcoming and conquering numerous hurdles, trials and tribulations. The Biceman has demonstrated he has grit, and now the world is getting to witness his real talents.

Bo Bice Donates to help Apple turn Black

Bo Bice recently was approached to aide a floundering charter school in Lakeside, Florida. His schedule doesn't permit him to donate his time but he has donated t-shirts and CD's to the school to aide them in emerging from $80K in the red to surfacing in the black on their financial records.

Parents Seek Star To Polish the Apple
Group trying to schedule lastminute concert to save charter school.

The school has been open for a decade and was the first charter school in the county - it is a school dedicated to helping kids with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and Attention Deficit Disorder.

Whether the board decides to actually close the school may not depend just on possibly obtaining the $80K, it may take more persuasion. These parents wanting to maintain the school, though, have high hopes. The school has done much to improve their children's educational needs in meeting certain criteria necessary for kiddoes who struggle with ADD and ADHD. Being someone who can personally identify with this issue, I know how challenging it can be functioning in the world with this condition. When I was a kid in school (in the dark ages) these disorders were not yet identified - there were not specialized educational programs to assist anyone afflicted with them. Many kids fell through the cracks of the educational system because of their frustrations in learning challenges. I just thought I was stupid. ;)

"Williams said she's confident that, if successful, the fundraising efforts will convince the board to have an emergency meeting before June 30 and keep the school open."
"Williams and a group of parents are working with William J. "Bull" Robinson, of County Line Road Records in Lakeland, to put on the concert.
Robinson said he's worked on fundraisers before but never of this magnitude or with such short deadlines.
He decided to put together the concert after Bay News 9, a partner of The Ledger, ran a story about the school's closure. Robinson said it brought tears to his eyes.
"I don't think it took more than a minute to decide that . . . we had to help them out," he said."

Musicians who have been contacted to date; Garth Brooks, Keith Anderson and the Bellamy Brothers. Bo Bice, of American Idol fame, can't attend but is donating CDs and T-shirts to sell. Local bands are set to perform.
Robinson has narrowed the venue choices to Cypress Gardens, the Lakeland Center or Tiger Town. Ticket prices are said to be around $20 per person, depending on who performs. She hopes to attract at least 2,000 people. Robinson said he hopes to make the fundraiser an annual event.

"If the school closes, it can't be from lack of trying," Williams said.

Reminds me of the story of "The Little Engine That Could". At least Bice has donated products for the school to sell with all proceeds going to the school. No word if any other invitees have responded. I am proud of Bo for his generosity. He is in concert June 24th in W. Virginia and then in Tampa the 27th. Travel time, etc.. there is no way he could make this date.

Anyone thinking about travelling to see Bice in Tampa - take time to check out the world famous Salvadore Dali Museum in beautiful St. Petersburg (sister city to Tampa). It is amazing and located on the docks; great little cafe for lunch. St. Petersburg is scenic and fabulous for shopping.

Not only am I returning to write about Bo Bice, but MARY COLURSO is also back writing about him. He's touring in ALabama right now with a gig at Alabama Adventure Park in Bessemer, AL.
In the article, Ms. Colurso writes, "Now the sparkle is back in his eyes; a tinge of pink has returned to his cheeks. His ripped jeans actually fit well, instead of hanging loosely.
Bice seems like a content man as he bounces Aidan on his knee, with Caroline close by his side. Fact is, Bice says, holding his blue-eyed son keeps him from worrying about his career path - or how much he can control it."

I noticed when I saw him on the latest late night teevee show that he is looking much better, his face has lost that skeltor pallor he had for quite some time. I'm very happy for him and his family that he is doing so much better.

He has been speaking more of beginning a new CD within the next year, but has not been able to focus on anything substantial due to his very booked and hectic touring schedule. He has been talking about the next CD having more of the sound of his own three tracks cut on the Dual Disc, "Cinnamon & Novacaine", "Sinner In A Sin", and "Whiskey, Women & Time", a rocking country-influenced sound. You know, like what he really is about...one thing Bice adds to Ms. Colurso in a statement, "I hope he'll (Mr. Davis) allow me to season the album with more of me."

I would imagine with lessons learned this season on American Idol, and the criticisms hammered upon Bo's first CD, "The Real Thing", by all the rock and roll type music critics, that Mr. Davis will not pop-rock out Bo again and go with what the man does best.

Bo Bice, being healthier now than during the time frame the first CD was waxed should have more fighting strength to leverage his own sound and music over Clive's over-production tendencies. When the time comes down, Biceman, let me know if you need that Superman shirt back... you, know in the event you need to SuperBice the Cliveman.

Bo Bice on Craig Ferguson

Bo Bice and Sugar Money sounded good last night on Craig Ferguson. Bice is putting a harder edge on "The Real Thing" than heard on the CD and it works well for him and the band. OK, here's the fashion news portion: he was dressed in jeans and an untucked white shirt with a cool Bohemian type blazer, he had the beard under control and trimmed to his jaw line,then around his lips it was fuller, like a goatee. I love this trim style. Bo looks so much better like this than untrimmed and scraggly like I've seen in the last several performance videos. He's filled out a little more, weight wise it seemed, his face did not look so very thin as it has been. His return from the intestinal surgery has been a long road. I'm so pleased to hear him sounding so good and looking almost the way he did last Spring. It's been a while since I've heard and seen him perform. It served as a reminder of the great qualities he possesses as a performer.

Bo Bice and Constantine first to re-direct Idol

In an article by MTV:

"Chris Daughtry and Taylor Hicks have been favorites for so long this "American Idol" season, it's easy to forget that for its first three years, the show was a pop and R&B competition."

"I told Bo that he is the reason that I auditioned," Daughtry said. "I always thought that it was a little cheesy and it was real pop-oriented and I didn't think that I would be able to be myself, but when I saw him, he came out here and did his rock thing and everybody accepted it and he got very far. I thought, 'You know what? There is nothing stopping me from doing it.' "

"Bo opened up a lot of doors for a lot of people," added Bucky Covington, an eliminated rocker finalist. "I think he did the show a lot of good by coming on. He did a heck of a job, and so far with his career he's doing a fine job ... and I thank him very much for it."

It's true that The Biceman provided the show with its first positive change in direction. The pop-tart phase would have gotten very old, shortening the ride of American Idol. He also gave encouragement to Daughtry, Covington and Taylor "The Soulman" Hicks to give it a shot - get the exposure these talented guys needed to move their careers in music to a better level. I think he has been also inspiring in the way he has handled himself since the show. I personally love his CD, "The Real Thing", and the video he has released is artistically pretty well-made.

I haven't put out my 2 cents here, I am certain the whole story is not told, but, in the heat of the discovery, I did go give BonaFide Bice.com my personal lack of humor about the latest Bo Bice News the other night (the bar scrap incident).

I am/was pretty concerned about Bo, he is not a violent person by nature, normally, but I can bet there are quite a few folks 'out there' who may be have had 'one too many' and thought they were "10 feet tall and Bullet Proof". SO...keeping that in mind... (The Biceman is Not a Saint anymore than he is Superman. He is a man though, and well I know how real men can be...)

Anyway what I have recently been informed that there is More to this story...Now, Bo if you're attacked by someone else, you have every right to defend yourself, but just a reminder dear Bo you weren't wearing your Superman shirt that night, either...I was worried you could get hurt. Man, maybe you need to start packing some 'muscle' to watch your back baby.

MAD about MAD TV

My daughter, Daphne, my 7 year old was mighty upset this past Saturday night. She had seen advertised that Bo Bice was going to be on Mad TV. I tried to tell her that he wasn't but - well what do I know? Normally I don't let her watch this show, too much of the content too risque' for her age group, but to prove a point, she got to see at least parts of this show.

In the opening segment viewers immediately were entertained by being brought into the parody/spoof on Bo Bice. Of course, Daphne had to exclaim, "Momma, that guy so wants to be Bo Bice and he just can't sing!" She added, "Bo will pop out in just a minute and be all laughing about this other guy trying to be like him. Bo Is so funny, he is probably in the back laughing too hard to come out!" I sat quietly working on an article. The skit was over and no real Bo appeared.

She struggled so hard to stay awake it was cute yet sad; her head would do that sort of jerk you do when you're falling a sleep sitting up. Finally I got her lay down on the sofa, and predictably she went out like a light. Bo Bice recently performed the first single off of his CD, "The Real Thing", song of the same title. Bice was performing with a touch of a cold, which showed in the lowering of parts of the song a few octaves and a slight hoarseness. He was, though, great fun to watch as always. He looks good, regaining some of the weight he lost during his life-threatening illness and surgery experienced last year.

Some fans and critics of Bice have accused him of not staying with his brand of music; a true talent like Bo doesn't need to stay within one genre, he should be able to perform the type of songs of his choice. Now, granted the recent CD is a pop-rock CD, not Bo's normal Southern rock sound; it still is a nice CD, one that can be listened to over and over. His vocals are the best part, and Bo Bice has one of The Best Male singing voices to come out in such a long while. To the critics, fans and non-fans a like bemoaning that 19E ruined him, that the AI show has taken away his originality, I say what a bunch of crap. Prior to AI he struggled in small venues, no one had heard his music outside of Alabama and the SE. His fan base was realtively small (but they are fiercely loyal) and he was not getting the exposure he needed to break out. AI and his CD, "The Real Thing", is providing Bice the break out opportunity he needed. Forums in Bo Bice Underground, The Bicesquad, SugarMoney, "Let's Talk some Sugar", BonaFide Bice repeatedly have debates pop up with this issue.

One poster from 'garageband.com', said quite eloquently that he'd give up 'parts of his genatalia' (let's not talk further about which parts) to get a record deal with 19E and have Bo Bice's opportunities in the music world. He had added to his post, that Bice has done the right thing with his CD. He also added, "What good is it to be out there sweating in bars, performing your music, writing your own music, if no one else is going to hear it?"

Good point.

Bo Bice is making the most of what has been given him through American Idol. He has greatly expanded his fan base, and increased his personal fortune allowing him to give his loved ones a better life. So to those who think that he has sold-out, who criticize him for trying something different musically on his CD, I'll say sticking to rigid principals in life will give you rigid results. True success lies in being able to adapt, change and intelligently compromise.

I am proud of the strength and courage he continues to demonstrate in overcoming great obstacles. Personal issues such as breaking his foot on-stage suring an AI4 concert, and the illness that could have killed him and put him in the hospital twice. Putting that aside, he is learning to navigate the brutal music and entertainment industry. It's not just the making of the music, it's also in realizing how everything you say becomes Important, every song you sing becomes Important, everything you wear becomes Important. The very length of your hair becomes Important.

It is in those facets of his life that you see the true picture of who Bo Bice is; it's not whether he sings songs by Lynyrd Skynyrd or songs like "U Make Me Better" from his current CD. It's his perserverance and ability to do a great job and give his "all" to whatever type of music he performs. It's the ability he is demonstrating to adapt, change and intelligently compromise. In working to do the Right Thing he is becoming The Real Thing.

The onslaught of germ warfare battling it out with my immune system provided me an excuse to spend time reviewing my Bo Bice files. IT built to a thundering crescendo to throw its worse at me yesterday. The Ugly-Bugly's LAST hurrah. I camped out, tissue box at my side, blanket around my knees, and settled at my computer.

I spent some time visiting his numerous fan-sites and forums, finding the Main Topic is typically how HAWT he is, how awesome his hair looks while he's swinging it, his beautiful blue eyes, (that are not only blue, but have gorgeous, long, two-toned eyelashes). The Bicesquad.net and Bicesquad, the Sugarmoney Fansites, Bo Bice Addicts, BonaFide Bice (although not so much; the folks running this site gravitate toward facts, sort of like the Bo Bice News Channel). I have to say again, I am pleased to see Bo's official site, bobice.com stepping up to update the site and make changes.

Apparently I am experiencing a hat fixation, especially berets; adorable, fun, a favorite of mine. I once had an extensive collection of them...including one exactly like this one in the pic. Natasha Bedingfield looks good in them too.
While, of course The Biceman is a sexy man, his most attractive trait that increases His Sexiness is his sense of humor. He has a goofy side and loves a good joke, and he plays pranks on his friends. A goodlooking man without a sense of humor is a complete BORE in my opinion. Humor can make a plain man sexy, and a gorgeous man outrageously sexy.

A few of my funny and sexy favorite comedians, Steve Carroll, Jon Stewart, and Stephen Colbert. Talented, funny, sexy.

Bo rolls it all up into a beautiful package.

I've read lots of opinions about the Regis/Kelly "Live" show today. Some folks think that Bice and S$ playing a pop tune like "You're Everything" is "sucking the life out of them". Hello... Clueless Ladies, (is that harsh?) if that were the case he wouldn't have played this tune. It's a catchy clever, fun, sexy tune, albeit pop. He could have performed "Valley of Angels" instead. No one made Bo play that song, he chose it for a reason (Thank you my Gorgeous "Bubba" *waving back*). ;)

I thought Bice sounded and looked amazing, the band was off. I did find it distracting that as a band they (again) weren't showing ANY emotion while playing. Some folks have opined that perhaps the guys were 'tired'...or stage/camera shy (remember on Jimmy Kimmel, same thing, the wooden band look)...some folks think they have been told to lay low, RCA wants them this way. BUNK! I say wake up Coop (by the way, darlin' you're looking GOOD these days!) and Shane, Chris, et al, Represent in the Way you know you should.

You get one go round, man take it while it's Hot and make it yours.

I love these guys, and want the best; especially for my Bice.

OK, what's up Sugarmoney. Jangly drums Shane, dude, tone them down. Background vocals erratic. Get it down what and who is gonna sing and stick to it; sounded like improvisation to me. Needs more work in that area. We can blame it on the Regis and Kelly sound crew I guess... OK enough of my ever not so humble opinions.

I'm so pleased "Bubba"!!! So happy that you performed my favorite song! (Next fav song got cut off at the end of the show.) Regis was being a blathering idiot, so I don't blame my man for not chatting him up more. Someone needs to write ol' Regis better lines. Google and Bo Bice fan sites such as The Bicesquad and Bonafide Bice have more current information than the "official fan site" in which dues paying fans have joined with the anticipation of being provided all the breaking Bo Bice news, photos, activities. (Even Bice's myspace.com promising changes to come, stays the same.)

He'll play a benefit concert for the Family Violence Center at 6 p.m. March 15. The full capacity of the theater will be made available. Tickets are on sale for $5 through Oneida Casino Ticket Star."

This appearance date also on a Google alert and posted on Bonafide Bice and the Bicesquad: "Nashville’s 107.5 The River, is now advertising “Spring Break and Shake” with Bo Bice and Saving Jane." No date is provided on the station's site, but was once listed as March 24th, but have been reading it to be March 25th now (forums)...who know for sure?

Granted these are small venues, but concerts upcoming, just the same.

I'm not complaining about the Fan Club fees, my concern is about a much bigger matter that is beginning to negatively impact Bo Bice... The glaring lack of consistency in promoting and keeping any and all Bo Bice news current.

Bo's recent concert in Washington DC with boy-band Click 5, benefiting Breast Cancer, was never mentioned. (Google alert) Discussion about this concert has been limited to forum members, no "official" photographs posted. The only photos have been by concert attendees and members of fan forums. DC Concert pics from fan. We thank "Salisbury Fan" for these.

Reading through the various site forums, BFB, Bicesquad and bobice.com, there is an overriding concern for Bo Bice; where are Bice's publicity folks? shouldn't he have had a photographer on hand to take professional quality photos in D.C. to post on bobice.com and elsewhere to show the man in concert, show the crowd reaction, generate excitement for future appearances? Instead, the only review widely distributed is by a reporter obviously 'macking' for The Click 5. This reporter, article already covered in my blog had nothing positive to pen regarding Bice. The Click 5 had their image covered and properly reported on; Bice, zippo.

To maintain interest and to feel "involved", fans who cannot tramp across country to see Bice in person would benefit greatly from adequate coverage of the shows. This is where fans thought becoming a "Bo's Peeps" would be an asset.

Relying on outside fan sites' forums, such as bobice.com and the Bicesquad, Bonafide Bice, etc... is insufficient coverage for a Rising Star.

Bice needs a photographer in tow, a designated writer to provide regular reviews on all his appearances. These latest small venue appearances have had ties in with chartible organizations and issues. Fabulous opportunity to continue to foster how kind his heart is; to continue to promote that positive aura he exudes while performing and in just meeting folks.

I just have to inquire, adapting a thread topic on bobice.com, "Where in the World is (the) Bo Bice (coverage)?"

It is interesting to me reading these two very different takes on Bice in concert at the above mentioned concert.

This first take is from one of the performers at Mess Fest 2006, Gian Cruz

"I met Bo Bice in his dressing room after he finished his set, which was VERY cool. He's a very mellow guy, and very kind. I didn't want to disturb him so I just popped my head in to say a quick hello, but he welcomed me in and we chatted for a little bit. He even said that he liked my performance! He didn't get to see it but he heard it from backstage.
But the absolute HIGHLIGHT of the night was that Bo Bice gave me a congratulatory tequila shot! I told him he should take the shot with me, but he said he couldn't take hard liquor anymore. So he chugged on a beer while me and one of his friends took the tequila shot. I must say... that was a fricking awesome moment!
I didn't really get to meet The Click Five, but I don't really care much for that band anyways. My little sister did take a picture with them, though. I don't know if it was just bad timing when I met them for the little bit that I did, but they seemed like they only like to hang out with themselves. I'm sure they always like to meet their fans, but I guess backstage it's a different story."

"While Bice certainly belted out his songs, from "U Make Me Better" to an impassioned cover of the Allman Brothers' "Whipping Post," he seemed detached from his performance. He rarely spoke between songs, encouraging little audience enthusiasm other than a few predictable shouts of "I love you!"
The reporter adds, "By contrast, the Click Five engaged easily with the audience, whose members danced, clapped along and sang nearly every song of the 45-minute set. That spirited reaction wasn't too surprising, given how catchy the group's songs are: the bouncy "Just the Girl" sounded like a sequel to Fountains of Wayne's "Stacy's Mom," while the rocking "Pop Princess" was reminiscent of Cheap Trick."

This "Washington Post" reporter, an obvious Click 5 fan. I have to say I don't get it, Click 5 seems to me like another Boy-Band trying to be The Beatles.

Regardless Bicefans, I doubt that Bo Bice, his family, grandmother, wife or dogs could really give a care about what this "Post" reporter has to say. I can more appreciate what a fellow musician (Gian Cruz)has to say about Bice. The fact that Bo treats fellow musicians and the folks backstage with kindness and consideration speaks loudly about his True Nature. Entertainers are expected to "come alive" for the paying public.

Bo Bice's hair looks absolutely glorious in the video! (Don't hate him because he's beautiful!) He's also looking healthy and outfitted in cool ensembles. I think he comes across the camera amazingly well. The boy may have some acting chops going on. Fansites like the Bicesquadders have been expressing that they love what they saw; very complimentary of Bo and the video. bobice.com of course only has the Most Positive of Praise to honor Bo. From reports I've seen, the shooting of the video was a lengthy process, but from the reviews of Bice's fans, well worth the time, trouble and wait. Overall, Bice fans adore the video.

When I initially viewed the video I thought something was wrong with my computer, the vocals and the lip movement were out of sync, like a foreign film but in this case no subtitles required. I watched it a few more times. (Of course, this was no hardship, Bice is fun to watch.) Nothing was wrong with my set. I went online and found several posters on the fansites commenting to the effect, 'who's going to notice anyway'. The "foreign film" effect may be intentional on the part of the producers. The video incorporates interesting lighting, with an almost surreal glow bouncing off some of the footage and light seemingly emanates from Bice while performing the chorus refrain of "The Real Thing". Nice job there.

I first thought the video might come out with a love-story leaning, with Bo singing to a lovely lady, intent on pursuing their romantic relationship. It's not; instead we have Bice asking fans and audience if they accept him, that their appreciation for the talents he possesses and what he has to offer is "The Real Thing".

The poster, "foundlingmw", has said before that she works with Bo’s relatives. She also has never posted breathless “OMG you won’t believe this Bo is my new BFF he’s going to tattoo my name on his bicep” craziness either. There have also been several mentions of him wanting to make guest appearances on television shows. So this doesn’t seem completely out of the realm of possibility.I only had time for a quick scan here and didn’t see any mention of this, so I will plant the seed. A little birdie just told me that Bo is going to be on “Scrubs” and “My Name is Earl.” No dates or other details, but it is exciting news. Btw, the little birdie is the third member of the Singing Jays, the cousin you guys haven’t met. If Bo is really going to be on these shows, I’m sure you guys will find all the details well in advance. If I hear anything more, I’ll post it."

"Clive Davis’ annual pre-Grammy extravaganza is the hottest ticket of the year in Hollywood, perhaps eclipsing Vanity Fair’s Oscar party.

Once inside the ballroom, it was clear that whatever dinner was being served was not being eaten too intently by anyone. The 900 or so guests were so busy socializing and taking pictures that there was no time to eat a morsel.

The cocktail hour was chaotic and packed, with folks like Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler and Joe Perry making slow progress through a sea of record execs and producers.
There was an area of hip-hop types in the front, including Jay Z and Beyonce, Chris Brown and Mary J. Blige.Next to that table: Carlos Santana, Sheryl Crow, Aerosmith’s Tyler and Perry and Rob Thomas with wife Marisol and manager Michael Lippman. Jamie Foxx’s group took up a table, and Randy Jackson was right next door with Kenny "Babyface" Edmonds and three lovelies: Gabrielle Union, Sanaa Lathan and Regina Hall.

There was a big "American Idol" presence with Fantasia, Kelly Clarkson, Bo Bice, Mario Vazquez and Carrie Underwood all in attendance. Diana Ross got the big center table, where she held court in a glittering jacket that could be seen for miles around (she had several of her children as guests).

Roger also mentions he talked to Natasha Bedingfield, and KISS stalwarts Gene Simmons (with the mother of his children Shannon Tweed) and Paul Stanley. There was also a group of talking heads: Jimmy Kimmel, Craig Ferguson, Pat O'Brien and Bill Maher were seated through the top tier at different tables.

"The show: Foxx and Fantasia made the night memorable for spontaneity, when following a steamy sing-to-each-other and duet, Foxx invites American Idol Fantasia back to his room from the stage. He refrained from providing his room number at the Hilton, in public; whether Fantasia decided to visit the Hilton is unknown...

Rod Stewart provided an amazing performance of his rock hits, not his recent ballads.

Kanye West and Ludacris made a surprise appearance with Snoop Dogg for some rappin’ and R&B with Jamie including the hit, “Gold Digger.”

Rob Thomas and Santana rocked the house with a seductive version of “Smooth.” Kelly Clarkson showed that her power singing is for real. Chris Brown is a cool dancer.

The night was unofficially dedicated to Barry Manilow, the first star of Arista Records in 1974 with “Mandy.” Thirty two years later, his new album on Arista debuts next week at No. 1 with 156,000 copies sold. That gives Clive four albums in next week’s top 10. Hello! And Clive announced signing Pearl Jam to J Records."

Mr. Davis may take hits and criticisms regarding his sometimes over-produced tracks, but the man obviously knows what he is doing.

I was picturing Bo at this event, how he must have felt in a room surrounded by the celebrities and music greats...Oh what a night.

Bo Bice met up with last season's mysterious Idol dropout contestant Mario Vansquez before heading over to talk to Dave Grohl of The Foo Fighters. Bice asked him if he could open up for the Foo Fighters on their up-coming acoustic tour. Grohl's response: "Of course!" Its reported, after Bice walked away, Grohl whispered that he doesn't really care who opens the shows. Is this Foo Fighter full of "foo" or what?
It would be unsettling to have your opening act upstage the Main Attraction.

Of course, unaware of the Grohl whisper-moment, when Bo was asked his opinion of Grohl, he commented with, "He's the nicest guy".

Bo Bice giving free Valentine's Day show at Montana West

"American Idol" rocker Bo Bice will perform a free Valentine's Day concert with his band SugarMoney Tuesday at Richland Township night club Montana West.

Bice, the long-haired heart-throb who was runner-up to Carrie Underwood on the fourth season of the hugely popular Fox reality show, will stop at the club which is opening just for the performance, as part of an East Coast tour. The show is being sponsored by Philadelphia radio station Q102.

Dena George, manager at Montana West, said Bice and his band will perform at 9 p.m. and doors will open at 7 p.m. She said there is no admission charge for the show, but all patrons must be 21 or older.

The 30-year-old Birmingham, Alabama, native garnered a huge fan following with his heart-felt brand of southern rock during the "American Idol" competition last year, and his debut CD "The Real Thing," released in December, has already been certified gold.

The well-reviewed pop-rock disc has been sitting on Billboard's Top 100 albums for seven weeks.

'Who'll wear boogie shoes in Super Bowl XL?' by Peter Schrager with FOXSports.com' Posted: 12 hours ago.

I located this article as I was scanning to see what recent stories or information on Bice might be crawling along the web. Interestingly I get this article, by sports writer, and apparently budding music critic Peter Schrager.

Schrager proceeds to incorporate Bo Bice's name to generate an increase in attention for his sports article. He writes in the opening paragraph,

"To cite a "salute" as a "wild" touchdown dance is like calling Bo Bice's music rock n' roll. It's not absurd, it's just a stretch."

It seems unnecessary that Mr. Schrager stoop to such a low-level attention seeking ploy. You'd think the fact that he works for the Fox News Network and has a regular article under the Fox internet umbrella he wouldn't need to resort to this...plus I don't hear Bice commenting on any deficit in Schrager's writing ability to forward his music.

Call me silly but aren't we mixing apples and oranges?

This article discusses touchdown maneuvers and dances by regular season players who never got to do their 'rumba' in the SuperBowl end zone. Fascinating? Schrager excitedly points out, "Jose Cuervo. The company is offering $5 million to any Seahawks or Steelers player who does a dance so elaborate that the league deems it "fine worthy" on Sunday. The tequila makers took out a full page ad in Wednesday's USA Today, encouraging players to go for it, have a little fun and push the envelope after a TD." he closes with, "I'm hoping someone. If not, we may have to keep doing that Macarena dance on the cruise ship for a few more years."

In this case, whereas Bo Bice's name gets attention, too bad Schrager thought it 'cute' to utilize the Bo Bice name and attempt to play a Simon Cowell-type-music-critic.

Scanning the internet, it is interesting how often Bo's name is being used to draw attention to websites and products that have absolutely nothing to do with Bice or even have a mention of him once the page is opened. I'm not going to provide a list of these in my blog, but it is my opinion that he is being used because he's a pretty topic.

"J-Dub"'s response to Bo Bice seems to reflect the impact of Bice's 'Natural Magic' he works on almost everyone he comes in contact with; fans and member of the music industry. It's all about treating others the way he wants to be treated. Bo walks the talk. True greatness requires more than just talent, it requires heart, good heart, and Bice has it in spades.
Bo Bice was interviewed this morning on 107.5. This station posts interviews after the fact, so if you miss it, check out the site for information,reviews and possibly pics. Looking over their site, it seems to take a day or two to get up the information, so may not be on there today.

About 150 women stood outside the Twisted Martini Friday afternoon, and no the bar was not giving away free drinks. They were waiting to see American Idol’s Bo Bice. Last year’s American Idol finalist performed for an hour and later signed autographs for his fans. Tickets to the concert could only be won by women through a contest sponsored by FM-95.1.

Well at least we have "sdstns" who may have been one of these beautiful ladies in the line-up.

This is Brent Smith, lead singer of "Shinedown". Discovered him recently; his band performed at the Nokia Theatre in Grand Prairie, Texas (little suburb of Dallas; American Idol 4 played here.) Man this guy can rock! He is ENERGY, PASSION, and the band is tight! Write up in The Dallas Morning News excitedly proclaimed him to be equal parts Ronnie Van Zandt, David Coverdale and Chris Cornell, and one of the best rock singers to come out of the South since Chris Robinson of The Black Crowes. I have to completely agree! This guy is great to watch!

It's true, I did it. Curiousity was killing this cat.

I've never been much of a joiner, especially since experiencing past joining endeavors; book clubs, you know, you read books, then get together over bottle(s) of wine or margaritas and review what you may or maynot have gotten out of that week's novel of choice. Writer's groups, (let's rip each other's work apart over tenses and adjective useage, story lines)...Art clubs discussing art history, painting groups, where we all would sit together and paint. In these groups at least I'd walk away with new perspectives, knowledge, good and bad information, more of a personal growth situation.

I've just never been one to join the type of clubs or groups where you just sit around with a group of "wimmen" (Texas-speak) talking about problems, issues, whatever, just, well, No. Our neighborhood country club has extended numerous invitations to "Come, visit, see what fun you can have with us!" As they list all the 'ladies who lunch, ladies who tennis, and ladies who golf' opportunites. No.

It was inevitable that I become a 'Bo's Peeps'. (Besides I found that killer outfit...) Ah, the things one can do in the name of True Love. (big sigh here)

How is Aidan doing?

He’s doing magnificent. He just rolled over which is a big step in the Aidan world. Yeah, I mean he’s great, he’s doing great. It’s cool having this little spirit, just this little spirit to look at and to hold (?). Y’all are gonna make me cry. I got on the bus last night and it was so cool ’cause he had this little cold when I got home this week and you know how they do their nose (He kind of demonstrated, it was cute) and I used to be this big germ freak and he gets all this stuff on my shirt and I’m like “Eh, so what?” My wife’s like “Oh wow, you’ve really changed.”

First we as a group here in Jacksonville want to say we are very proud of you and all you’ve accomplished. Second, what was Simon Cowell really like?

Oh well we used to sit around and eat cheese dip and drink martinis together. No, not really. He was really cool. He’s got one of the best points of view on the show. They’re all great. I think everyone’s figured out the formula. I’m not really letting the cat out of the bag. You’ve got the cat that’s groovy, then sweet and beautiful Paula and then you’ve got Simon (said dramatically). It’s a good formula, it really works. They make a good team. You don’t want to say it’s an act because trust me, if you see that many people a day you can’t act like you don’t like people, it’s genuine. No, he’s really a cool guy. I guess it’s just a matter of what day you catch him on. He then related how Simon caught Shane leaning against his Bentley one night smoking and said it was not good.

Do you have any regrets about any of this and how long do you hope to continue a singing career?

Bo did a piece of My Way. Oh regrets, I have a few, but I did it sideways. Thank you, thank you, I wrote that myself. I need some royalty money.

Um, I don’t have many regrets. In everything I’ve done in life many times I’ve made mistakes and messed up royally. I just truly believe in forgiveness and the strength of love, you know, so no regrets. On the other (unintelligible) the same reason I have a love for this music and being able to come out and do this with you guys. I’ll keep doing this until you guys stop coming. There will be like one here and one there and me with a really bad weave or a combover.

DJ comment: (Laughing) You could do this full time.

What is your favorite song to perform?

Um, I think, it’s hard to choose, there’s so many good ones, but I really love Valley of Angels. It’s one of those songs I look forward to playing every night. Probably because it was such a settling time in my life when I wrote it, and then to see it evolve into what Clif made it into in production. It was very special. I can vividly remember hearing it for the first time when he brought it back to me. Before, it was just an acoustic song, me sitting with a guitar and playing it for him and then him taking it to a whole ‘nother coast and bringing it back with a vocal part and a guitar part. It was just awesome, because I think being a songwriter and wanting to create, I think one of my faults and something that I’ve tried to accept, you tend to be a little more closed-minded to what you write. So opening up to being a little more vulnerable and allow someone to come in and help me produce instead of being the guy who has to have his fingers pressing all the buttons. It was magnificent, it was truly great. I was a big part of the song, yet I felt like such a minute portion of it when I got it all put together. It’s just a well composed and beautiful song. I look forward to playing it every night.

I was just thinking about sdstns today, and our little misunderstanding, you know when she referred to me as ..."oh her, yeah she's a big fan of this site. What's Different About Bo?
Almost 35 million viewers kept their appointment with "American Idol" and once again, the wannabes did not disappoint.
One person who knows the pressures of "Idol" firsthand is former contestant, Bo Bice.

"I lost about 30 to 35 pounds but then, I've gained about 10 pounds back, luckily," Bo told us.
Now fully recovered, and back at work on the music video for "The Real Thing," Bo is exercising more and eating better.
"I'm going to be healthy for my family, and I want to be healthy, so, I can go out and tour and be with the fans and stuff," Bo told Access.

Contestant, Gail Couch, (not pictured) was chosen the winner of the contest with her pick, "Bo's Peeps". Really, it is sort of a clever play on words. When (and if) you think about it, other than just The Bo Bice Fan Club, (since The Bicesquad name has already been claimed), there is not a lot of material out there to choose from with Bice's name in the heading. I certainly did not have any Great Ideas when it came to coming up with a creative and catchy name.

It was worth our wait, Cody and I had our 'jammies-vigil to watch Jimmy Kimmel last night! (We must keep up the stats, '3 people and the dog that watch Kimmel', per lulu.) I had to keep poking him in the ribs to keep him up, he'd had a busy dog-day and really was more in the mood for an early bedtime. Bribing with warm popcorn did the trick! He has become a big Bo Bice fan. It's like we have our own personal 'Bicesquad'; he 'speaks' when I show him Bo Bice's CD and I ask him 'who's our favorite singer?'; his basset/beagle bark sounds like "BO, BO, BO"! Yeah, OK, on the trite side, but true...

Seriously, the real Bicesquadders did Bo proud last night; I saw many faces I recognized from the forums. They were singing and screaming and jumping non-stop. I know it made Bo feel right at home. Speaking of feeling right at home, who did I immediately see over his shoulder as he began singing "The Real Thing"??? Shane Sexton on drums. This confirmed the 'insider information' Bona Fide Bice announced. You just can't go wrong following their information and leads. I was a little surprised when Kimmel announced Bo was appearing that Sugar Money was not mentioned, nor did Kimmel say anything about them the rest of the program. Sort of like Bo snuck 'em in the back door, "SHHHH, come on in guys, just don't wake the parents," feel to it.

Sugar Money sounded good, and it was great to see them with Bo! Bo looked really good, like he has regained some of the weight he has lost throughout his ordeal. Having his 'brothers' with him can only help.

It seems they had a 'pit stop' on the way to Kimmel:

One of my favorite lady writers from BONAFIDE BICE.com, lulu, in a recent post says with information gained from AI forum:

""The infamous cer (poster on the AI forums who knows the Sugarmoney drummer, Shane Sexton) claims that Sugarmoney will be Bo’s backing band tomorrow night on the Jimmy Kimmell show. The rumor seems to be backed up by the fact that guitarist Kris Bell lists a Jimmy Kimmell appearance on his MySpace page.
Color me shocked, confused and a little concerned. The ‘boys’ have not impressed RCA to date, so why the sudden change of heart? Were the Hired Hotties busy? Are RCA cutting back on expenses? Is it just because only 3 people and a dog watch the Jimmy Kimmell show?

Bo Bice: A Very Special "Moment"

In the CMT "In The Moment with Bo Bice", special that started last night and will continue for several more airings (check CMT link on this site for more information), fans and interested parties are able to witness intimate moments in the life and times of Bo, Caroline, Bo's bandmates and 'brothers' of SugarMoney. The CMT camera followed Bo and Caroline through hospital and doctor visits, some involving Caroline's sonograms, others tracking Bo's health issues concerning his internal life-threatening illness.

I was mesmerized by Bo's ability to handle the camera crew and all the turmoil with ease and grace. He is a 'cat' comfortable in his own skin. Caroline provides viewers with the reasons he has chosen her as his wife and life-mate; she is gracious and strong and wise; shouldering the family day-to-day affairs including a move across states, while being very pregnant and having a very sick husband, I have much respect for her.

It seemed too short a visit with them, "In The Moment" with Bo Bice was moving, real, and provides a family home video feel.

Bo Bice is as I always have known Bo to be; considerate, kind, gentle, funny and passionate about all and everyone important to him. Now I have added insight into the relationship between Bo and his band, SugarMoney, which until this "Moment" I did not realize the depth between these guys.

I know Bice's CD "The Real Thing" has garnered its share of criticisms, but I for one, like it. I know Bo is proud of it. (which is one reason I like it) The fact the execs at RCA allowed a dual disc speaks out volumes regarding their regard for Bo and his talent.

During the "Moment" special, at one point one of the recording guys in the studio (I'm not naming names here) asked for the cameras to go away; Bo was asking for his 'honest opinion' about a song that Bo was requesting to be "tweaked" and included on the CD and he obviously did not want to be honest in front of the cameras (out of respect for Bo and his feelings, I am sure). Guessing from the response from Bo and bandmates following the conversation, the honesty imparted was not what the guys wanted to hear. Bo was depressed and disappointed.

Time will tell what will happen in the story of Bo Bice and SugarMoney, but at this "Moment", I know their story has just begun.

Ronnie Thomas, of "The Decatur Daily News" has a book out with features on Bo Bice. He held a Book signing party at the "world famous Mama's Country Diner", folks were lined up for 3 hours!

I read a description of this book off of one of my favorite Bo Bice fan-sites, BONAFIDE BICE.com:

""Disappointingly, The Real Thing doesn't really rock all that much. That's not to say it sucks. It's just slicker and more studio-ified than expected. There are big names involved, of course: Clive Davis, Nickelback's Chad Kroeger (shudder), ex-Evanescence member Ben Moody, Richie Sambora, and Max Martin (the pop knob-twiddler who helped facilitate the rise of the Backstreet Boys, *NSYNC, and Britney Spears). The whole album has a climate-controlled, expensive-sounding feel – no organic ingredients here, just a bunch of lushly produced, written-by-committee songs with lyrics like, "When push comes to shove, it's never enough."

But even in safe mode, Bice is in fine voice throughout. He's a genuinely strong singer (I'd take Bice over Kroeger, or that clown from Creed, any day of the week) who's not afraid to let a Jesus Christ Superstar moment happen. Too bad The Real Thing is lacking the elements that made him so much fun to watch on Idol – no funk, no Black Crowes-ish blues, no Southern-fried anything, and just a smidge of gospel in "Valley of Angels" (one of two songs cowritten by Bice). A live album, or at least a track or two recorded with a real band, would have left more of an impression than the sum total of The Real Thing's mushy parts. Still, it's a decent enough effort from Idol's second-favorite runner-up. Honestly, no shame here. And chances are it won't make your ears bleed like that Clay Aiken album did."" (Cheryl Eddy)

One thing is for certain, "The Real Thing" is getting it's FAIR SHARE of coverage for Bo Bice. It has been reviewed by everyone who cares to voice an opinion about it and by almost every magazine and paper in the nation with an entertainment section. Reviews have ranged from "it so sux" type declarations to this type of piece. Another interesting part to this is that the CD was released a month ago and still we are reading more and new reviews.

An encouraging thought for Bo Bice and his fans to ponder; TRL seemingly has received more hype and comments than almost any other recent release currently on the music market. This states the obvious; Biceman, you have the attention of the public, you have the hearts of your fans, and the critics, right or wrong, realize you are a 'hot topic' to write about. TRL is catching The Real Buzz.

'Jesus may be taking the Wheel' (Carrie Underwood) but "The Real Thing" is taking it to the "streets".

Mr. Colurso responded back to my e.mail to her and clarifies her stand and statement about the Bo Bice CD, "The Real Thing". She doesn't mean for folks not to buy the CD, she simply thinks his next endeavor will be superior to this one.

Jewels, glad to hear you aren't a "squee" type. (I love that expression, which is new to me.) I think it's interesting that some of Bo's fans have taken me to task for recommending that people shelve the CD and wait for the next one. They're angry (in part) because they're not looking closely at the verb I used. How can you "shelve" something you don't own? Hmmmm.

Ms. Colurso's latest article on Bo Bice featured comments posted to her e.mail following the previous article where she said, "Our advice to consumers: Shelve "The Real Thing" and cross your fingers for the second Bo Bice recording."

It was kind, and a fair gesture to print the comments from fans rallying behind Bice and his new CD. I can appreciate how she and other critics may have experienced some disappointment over "The Real Thing", but give it another listen or two, Ms. Colurso and you may change your tune.

Granted I was also skeptical; the title for one threw me a little as there as so many other CD's that have been put out with similar names and titles that as well as the unfortuneate Coca Cola references available. But further listening to the CD, I realize his naming the CD "The Real Thing" has to do with how his love for music is 'the real thing' for him, the love of his wife and family, is 'the real thing' for him. He is not proclaiming himself as "The Real Thing" at all. It is not about him but about what matters most to him. Subtle difference in interpretation.

My comments to Mary Colurso:
Mary,
I think it brave of you to post some of the comments regarding Bo Bice's new
CD "The Real Thing". I agree with those who protest that it appeared many
critics had expectations that Bice was anticipated to bring "a second coming
of '70's rock"....

The sound on this CD is not "Whipping Post" type material, but many of the
songs are radio ready and potential hit material. Considering the majority
of the material on the stations today, they hold up much better than most of
the songs heard being touted as top tunes.

Bo's voice and sound sails through all of the tracks, even while riding the
undercurrents on the overproduced numbers.

It was condemning of you to recommend folks to not buy the CD, it is Bice's
first 'vehicle' into the commercial industry and really a much better
offering than it is being given credit. Granted if Bice had full run of the
CD it may have turned out differently.

I am not one of the fanatical fans that would "squee" (new word I have
discovered on his fan-sites) over anything he would put out, and I have been
called out by Bicesquadders and Bo Peeps on several articles I have written
about Bo when I have not glossed over everything about him. But I am a big
fan just the same.

I always enjoy your articles.

I recommend the CD, The Real Thing, especially the DUAL DISC.

Too late for me to think about it again. After making arrangements for Bo's first appearance that had to be cancelled due to his illness, I can't commit to another attempt to see him LIVE.

For those who have the $$ and the TIME, happy trails. I will just wallow in my sadness at not being able to see him on the Kimmel set. Being a Mom and all, it is difficult to make the arrangements to go...just glad that you're feeling better Biceman and able to reschedule!

I'll just have to be content to sit in my 'jammies and watch on TV.

In the pivotal moment of his budding career, American Idol's Bo Bice has been forced to put his career on ice. The reality-show runner-up should be celebrating the release of his debut CD, The Real Thing (with impressive first-week sales of 227,000, it placed fourth in Billboard's Top 200), and the premiere of a CMT special about his first taste of stardom, In the Moment: Bo Bice.But the Alabama native is back in his new hometown of Nashville after a sudden illness last month in Las Vegas forced him cancel appearances on The 2005 Radio Music Awards and Jimmy Kimmel Live. Bice is undergoing tests to discover why he's still suffering stomach problems despite surgery last August to repair what he describes as "a kink" in his intestines.
"He was having trouble eating," says In the Moment exec producer George Moll, whose crew followed Bice from the time Idol's tour began last summer until early December. "When we looked at the daily rushes, you could see that he was really struggling. And very, very thin."
According to his rep, RCA's Roger Widynowski, Bice is taking at least three weeks off before shooting a new video (a new tour to promote his album is also in the works). But the people around the 30-year-old are worried. "As a musician, you've got to strike it when it's hot," says pastor Donny Acton, a close friend and leader of Birmingham's New Hope Cumberland Presbyterian Church. "But he's not superhuman. He's got to get some rest." In the best of circumstances, Idol's rocket launch to stardom requires extraordinary stamina. And Bice has needed to deal with other significant events. He married his longtime sweetheart, Caroline Fisher, on June 15, shortly after the show's finale. He broke his foot on stage in New Hampshire on July 31, then had major intestinal surgery on August 18. He and his wife welcomed their first child, Aidan, on September 24.
Moll, a veteran record industry observer who created VH1's Behind the Music, believes the stress that triggered Bice's current health crisis didn't start until the singer realized he could no longer control his career. The job requires him to be constantly on the road, separated from his family and his longtime band, and recording songs that (with a few exceptions) are not his own.
From all accounts, Bice has taken the hardships in stride. But even he admitted in an interview in October that he's had trouble rolling with all the changes. "If I've learned anything in the past year, it's to let go of a lot of things," he said. "I'm kind of a control freak when it comes to my business. But you can't control everything all the time."

This is very true, Bo, you cannot control everything all the time, and learning to let go is a great lesson for all of us to learn. Success brings sacrifice and change, but success is something you are meant to achieve. The best advice I could provide is to let it happen; focus on what you love doing and let the rest go. You are not Superman, in the sense of being of supernatural power or strength, but in the sense of having something incredible to share that is unique, powerful and needed in the music world now.

Bo Bice Felled by Health Complications

According to 'our friend', Roger Widynowski, an RCA Records rep, Bice didn't collapse, but was rushed to the hospital once he presented symptoms of distress on Sunday night. Bo was rushed to a hospital, reportedly coughing up blood, blamed on symptoms of complications from his previous intestinal blockage surgery. During rehearsal for the 2005 Radio Music Awards held at the Aladdin Resort & Casino in Las Vegas, Bice began showing difficulty in performing and began to cough up blood.

Bo Bice will not be able to do "The Jimmy Kimmel Live Show" either, and has been replaced by Juelz Santana.

I am concerned over the fact that since Bo's surgery, he has not seemed to put on any weight, his face has continued to look so drawn and pale. I would have thought that within a month or so following surgery he'd have gained a few pounds, regained some color in his face, so I have to surmise that he has continued with some issues concerning the intestinal situation and has not wanted to let on or have the press invovled regarding this personal matter. It leads me to be concerned for him that this situation is not going away.
